The D100 was Nikon’s first DSLR aimed at enthusiasts and semi-professionals rather than working press photographers, pairing a 6.1-megapixel DX sensor with a body based on the F80 film SLR. It undercut the D1 series significantly on price while still offering respectable image quality for its era. The D100 uses the native Nikon F mount, with metering support for AI/AI-S lenses and autofocus with AF-series glass.
